Amelia Guimarin [CV] was born in California in 1984. She now lives and works in Vancouver, British Columbia. She is a researcher, writer and artist and is actively involved in various community projects. Her work focuses on issues of identity and labour. Her art spans the mediums of photography, film and video, and she often combines materials such as fabric and cardboard product packaging into these practices. Her most recent works of writing, art and research are informed by her relatively new status as an American in Canada and a mother to a young child.
Guimarin’s work also explores the relationships between various concepts and constructs, including art and craft, domesticity and publicity, femininity and identity, and history and memory. Her mixed media work addresses the intersections of these traditionally bounded spheres and therefore highlights the space between them. Her art also offers commentary on issues of sustainability as she often incorporates natural imagery with mass-produced embellishments and uses scrap fabric and historic photographs in many of her pieces.
